Great Questions

P

Great question — this is very important for hatchery success 👍🐣

Short, clear answer

Once you introduce active, mature cockerels to your already-laying hens:

➡️ Fertile eggs will begin appearing in about 7–10 days.

However, optimal fertility (best hatch rates) is usually reached by:

➡️ Day 10–14 after proper mating begins.

Why it takes time (simple biology)

  • Hens can store sperm in their reproductive tract for up to 2–3 weeks
  • But after first mating, it takes several days for sperm to:
    • Reach storage tubules
    • Be released consistently to fertilize eggs

  • Eggs already forming inside the hen before mating will still be infertile

Timeline Breakdown (Very Practical)

🗓️ Day 1–3

  • Cockerels start mounting
  • Eggs laid = mostly infertile

🗓️ Day 4–6

  • Some eggs may be fertile
  • Fertility still inconsistent

🗓️ Day 7–10 ✅

  • Reliable fertility begins
  • Good time to start collecting for incubation

🗓️ Day 10–14 🔥

  • Peak fertility
  • Best hatchery results

Ideal Cock-to-Hen Ratio (VERY IMPORTANT)

For layers in cages or deep litter:

  • 1 cockerel : 8–10 hens → excellent fertility
  • 1 cockerel : 12 hens → acceptable
  • More than that = poor fertility

In cages, fertility is usually slightly lower than free-range, so stay closer to 1:8

Cockerel Quality Checklist 🐓

Your cockerels should be:

  • At least 5.5–6 months old
  • Active, strong legs
  • Not overweight
  • Good libido (mounting frequently)

Avoid:

❌ Old cockerels (>2 years)

❌ Very fat birds

❌ Weak or lame males

Feeding Tips to Improve Fertility 🥚🔥

  • Protein: 16–18%
  • Add:
    • Vitamin E + Selenium
    • Vitamin A & D3
    • Zinc

  • Clean water at all times

Many hatchery farmers see 10–15% fertility improvement just from vitamin E + selenium.

When to Collect Eggs for Incubation

✔️ Start collecting from Day 7 onward

✔️ Best hatchery eggs = Day 10–21 after mating

❌ Do NOT incubate eggs laid in the first 5 days

Pro Hatchery Tip (Very Important)

If hens were previously with another male, discard eggs for 7 days to avoid mixed genetics.

If you like, tell me:

  • Number of hens
  • Number of cockerels
  • Breed (e.g., ISA Brown, Lohmann, local, cross)
  • Cage or deep litter

I can then give you a precise fertility and hatch-rate optimization plan tailored for your hatchery.
